What is Shockwave Therapy?

Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), otherwise known as Shockwave Therapy (or shockwave treatment) uses high pressure sound waves that travel through the skin to break down targeted tissue. The goal is to reduce pain and stimulate tissue repair.

What conditions can Shockwave Therapy treat?

Shockwave treatment has been proven effective in treating stubborn conditions that typical conservative management has failed in resolving. These conditions include, but are not limited to:

  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Hamstring tendinopathy
  • Patella tendinopathy
  • Tennis & Golfers elbow
  • Shin splints
  • Osgood Schlatter & Severs disease
  • Calcific tendinitis of the shoulder
  • Tendonitis treatment
  • Morton’s Neuroma (Bursal Neuromal Syndrome)

How many treatments will I require?

This differs between individuals and various injuries. A typical treatment course is between 4-6 sessions to gain a successful result.

How does Shockwave Therapy work?

  • Increases circulation: Improved supply of oxygen and nutrients to increase healing
  • Reversal of chronic inflammation: Restoring the body’s normal healing processes
  • Stimulation of collagen production: Healing injured tissue and making it stronger
  • Reduces ‘Substance P:’ Offering pain relief by reducing the concentration of this pain mediating chemical at the injury site

What will happen during my Shockwave Therapy session?

During shockwave treatment, a contact gel is applied to the injury site, and via a hand-held probe, high pressure sound waves are delivered in a controlled and focused manner. The treatment typically lasts 3- 5 minutes per area treated.
